Will use of IIRF to prevent hot linking also affect emails that we send to customers that contain links to images on our website by default? Is there a simple workaround? Could we apply the IIRF filter to our web images directory only and have an unpublicized directory for email image links?

Sure, you could do that.

I'm afraid I don't know much about HTML email, and referers, and hotlinking.

We usually use an img tag like on a a typical web page, but I am not sure what, if any, the referrer would be from a mail client. Perhaps no referrer? I tried using the example found in the help file and it is working for third party sites. I did not read how the sample will affect requests without a referrer nor do I know if this is how the request would come from a mail client. I guess I can run some tests and try to figure it out, but I was hoping somebody can save me the testing. The older I get the lazier I get.
